Information Regarding Reşad Gold Coins:
Sultan Reşad, who reigned as the Ottoman Sultan between 1909 and 1918, had commemorative gold coins, known as “Reşad altını”, minted by the Turkish State Mint in five (5) distinct weights to mark his accession to the throne. Over time, these coins gained significant popularity among citizens, leading to increased interest and demand in the bullion market. In response to repeated requests for their reissue, the Mint has now resumed production.
Reasons For Resuming Production:
These products, whose exclusive right of production belongs solely to the Turkish State Mint, have been illicitly manufactured domestically and abroad by unauthorized individuals and introduced into the market as counterfeit items.
Law enforcement agencies have seized substantial quantities of counterfeit Reşad gold coins during various operations conducted at different times.
Since these illegally produced coins do not meet standard specifications in terms of fineness (purity) and weight, unsuspecting citizens purchasing them suffer significant financial losses and become victims of fraud.
This situation also causes considerable harm to public and societal interests. Moreover, unauthorized producers of these non-standard imitation coins derive illicit and undeclared profits from this activity.
For these reasons, the General Directorate of the Mint and Revenue Stamp Printing Office has resumed production of Reşad gold coins, whose exclusive minting rights belong solely to the Mint. The production is in strict compliance with authentic technical specifications, including standardized fineness, weight, and enhanced security features. These coins are being minted in five (5) different weights, at 22 carats (916.6‰ fineness), with fineness and weight tolerances adhering precisely to ±0.002 (two-thousandths). They have been released to the market as of 7th July 2022.
On the obverse (front) of the newly minted Reşad gold coins, one finds the tughra (imperial monogram) of Sultan Mehmed V Reşad, flanked by two crossed torches and a laurel wreath. Below the tughra, the regnal year of issuance is inscribed, indicating in which year of his reign the coin was minted. Adjacent to the tughra, the word “Reşad” appears. Additionally, seven stars are positioned along the upper edge of the obverse. The torches symbolize knowledge, enlightenment, and civilization; the laurel wreath, composed of laurel branches, represents endurance through adversity, strength, patience, wisdom, and peace; and the seven stars symbolize the various provinces located across Anatolia and Rumelia.
On the reverse (back) side, the inscription “Azze nasruhu duribe fi Konstantiniyye” (“May his victory be glorified; struck in Constantinople”) indicates the coin’s place of minting in Istanbul. Directly beneath this inscription appears the Hijri year “1327,” marking the year of Sultan Mehmed Reşad’s accession to the throne. Surrounding the central design is another laurel wreath, similar to the one on the obverse, with a single star positioned at the top.
Beyond the inherent trust and authenticity guaranteed by the Turkish State Mint’s official production, additional security features, including microscopic text invisible to the naked eye, have been incorporated into these coins. We strongly advise citizens who wish to purchase Reşad gold coins from jewelers to specifically request only those securely produced by the Mint. This ensures they acquire genuine products minted to exact original specifications, thereby avoiding any financial loss upon resale due to discrepancies in fineness (millesimal purity) or weight.
The security elements embedded in Reşad gold coins can be easily and conveniently verified using the high-resolution cameras of modern smartphones.
Specifically, on the obverse, the left torch bears a “circular” mark, while the right torch features a “quadrangle” mark produced at precisely measured angles, determinable only through specialized methods employed by the Mint.
On the reverse, within selected laurel leaves of the wreath, the Arabic numerals “2022” (٢٠٢٢)—indicating the year of production—are inscribed with dimensions again measurable exclusively through the Mint’s proprietary techniques. These security features will be updated annually.
In the near future, these coins will also be offered in specially designed secure packaging.
