Reşad Gold Coin from Darphane (Turkish State Mint) – Ottoman Reşat Lira

On the obverse of the Reşat gold coins appear the tughra of Mehmed V Reşad, flanked by two crossed torches and a wreath of laurel leaves.

Beneath the tughra is written the anniversary year of Mehmed Reşad’s accession on which the coin was struck.
Beside the tughra the word “Reşad” is inscribed. Across the upper part of the obverse are seven stars. The torch on the coin stands for knowledge, enlightenment and civilisation; the wreath of leafy laurel branches symbolises endurance against hardship, strength, patience, wisdom and peace. The seven stars represent various provinces in Anatolia and Rumelia. On the reverse is the legend “Azze nasruhu duribe fi Konstantiniyye”, stating that it was minted in Istanbul; immediately below appears the Rumi date “1327” of Mehmed Reşad’s accession. Around this, as on the obverse, is a laurel-leaf wreath, and at the top a single star.
